Suggestion on promoting the Organisation

Changing the website:

Revise the whole website into a more interactive website which supports web 2.0.  Web 2.0 is more for the communities  while web 1.0 is for companies. What we want is to create awareness so we have to involve the community. One way to involve the community would be to allow the community to give feedback, suggestions and opinions which can further improve the system.

Create a thread in a local forum:

Creating a group in a local forum would help to raise awareness about the company e.g.sgclub, hardwarezone. This way people in singapore would know what services NAMS offers to the public and more people would seek help from them.

Create a Vlog account:

Do up a vlog, experiences of addicts and how they got through their addiction as well as commericial ads which have been create for addiction purposes. After compiling all, post it on youtube by creating a youtube channel. This way people will able to comment about the video and maybe some might share their addiction experience. This way the company would be promoted and more people would be worried about their addiction and would start consulting the organization.

Create a Facebook group:

According to statistics, out of 1.5 million Singaporeans who use the web, about 5.28% visits facebook every week. If you do the math 5.28% would be 79,200 Singaporeans visits Facebook every week. So using this statistics, we decided to create a facebook group which allow people to feedback about the company and also to help improve it. This way we are involving the community.

RSS Feeds:

RSS (most commonly expanded as “Really Simple Syndication”) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. By having a RSS feed on the website, people would know about the upcoming events of the company so that they would be able to attend. Also whenever a new video is being posted on the vlog. They would immediately know about it.

After taking a look at all of this suggestion, you might be asking yourself why are we using all of social media to promote. The reasons are below:

People nowadays will log on to the internet almost every single day either to check their mail or just browse through the web thus they will definitely be updated. Facebook which is created in febuary 2004, helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends, family and coworkers. It is a technology that faculitate the sharing of information through the social graph, the digital mapping of people’s real-world social connections. Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. Users of Facebook can join groups that they like or are interested in. These groups will give them daily updates about their products which in turn benefit both parties. Also with the constantly increasing amount of Facebook users, advertising on its page are way more effective then advertising on the television, radio and newspaper.

One more application that companies are making use to advertise is Twitter. Twitter is a totally different applications from Facebook. While Facebook allows people to join groups, play games etc, Twitter allows one to follow people whom they want to keep in touch. It is basically an application where users ‘tweet’ about their daily stuffs. Friends who follow them can read their daily tweets and get updated about their lives without the need of asking them or meeting up just to catch up. This way it saves up precious time and also it is effortless. Companies make use of Twitter to update about their products and Twitters who follow them will be updated. One most vital improvement by Twitter is the addition of SMS tweeting services across the globe.

With the public nowadays switching to new media, companies too need to ‘follow the trend’. The main idea is to have your product in front of millions of people logging into such networking websites. Promotion in such a place is much better then advertising traditionally on the newspaper, television or radio.

Nowadays almost everything could be found in the internet. From news, entertainment to politics. The internet has it all. Social media has made a huge impact towards the world. Some of the globally known social media applications are Facebook and Twitter. Everyone knows what Facebook and Twitter are and what they do. Social media are much more effective then old media( newspapers, televisions and radio) and companies exploit that to their advantage by using social media to advertise.

Social media or networking sites provide global exposure to products and services. Anyone can access and view the products and services within your social network. Users can click on the links of the websites and view the products themselves. Comments inputs feedback left by other users will help users get true evaluation of the product comparing to promotion by the companies itself.

Improvements and cooler aspects are added to these sites which makes it a great fun for people to use them. Users will find lots of applications embedded with it. Users with similar interest can group themselves to create communities where they would be able to discuss on topics of common interest. They will then share information about the latest products or links that would interest their other cyber friends.

Social media are not only used for making new friends but also are used effectively to promote products and services. Video sites are also another form where personal videos either promotional or descriptive can be used. Advertising in social networking sites has changed the whole perception of promotion and communication. With the added security in the social networks, promotion of products are much safer.

Case Study

I decided to do on a Case Study on a website similar to my organisation.

Source: http://www.passagesmalibu.com/

Who are they:

Passages is non-profitable  Alcohol and Drug AddictionTreatment center which is located

Thier Website:

The website that they have is rich in information about their news, their vision, mission and also the products such as supplements and books that they provide. Images is very helpful for websites as visitors always catch the attention of the picture.

Their Facebook Group:

This organization uses social media tools to enhance their interactivity with the public and gain more attention from them. By having a Facebook page, they will post updates about their blog entries on their wall , news feed,  where the public can be fans and follow their new updates. Also users of facebook are entitled to voice out their comments on their wall which is in turn able to help the company improve it’s services. This is what I called involving the community.

Their Blog:

They have a blog where the company will post updates on the tips about drug and alcohol addiction, ways of preventing it and also the services that they have recently offered. This will help the public to learn more about addictions prevention . Having a blog, this will make the public to come to the site more often as they have a consistently updated blog. The blog is to post more detailed information about the updates of the events, or have a talk of the month , or even post entires about tips and symptoms of addictions , ways of preventing it.  Also if you take a look at the right hand corner there are icons leading to their facebook group, twitter accounts, youtube channel and etc.

Their Video Channel:

Their youtube channel showcases what the company is about and the services being provided. The reason for using youtube is because youtube has a statistics of 15% of people in the who visits youtube every week.

Guest Speaker

A talk by a guest speaker Mr Lionel Chin ,former TP student and co founder of RippleWerkz  who has done a lot of works freelance or being in a company. His job is as a web designer.

5 key points

- School and Reality.

The outside world is never like school. It’s tougher and you must learn how to endure the hardship. What you learn in school, you must always remember to apply it in your working life. Although it is going to be a struggle at first. But the key point is that you must have endurance and produce work beyond expectation to keep you job or maybe even advancing in it.

- A Professional Portfolio.

People nowadays seldom use paperwork as a portfolio. Most of them have gone to new media. By using flash, one can actually show case his work foundation and impress the employer with his existing work.  It is an crucial factor for client’s decision to hire the designer just by looking at his portfolio.

- Freelance and Working for a company.

He made a comparison between both. Freelance is much more relax as you get to pace the work which you can do. But whenever you unsure to do about something it gets pretty irritating as no one is there to help you. While working in a company, it is much more stressful as due dates are always around the corner. He said at this point, it is wise to start freelance to help us build our foundation.

- Marketing ourselves

So you might think, you want to go freelance. But how are you suppose to start out? He gave some tips by actually using the use of social media to promote yourself. Like twitter, facebook, youtube, etc. This way you are able to gain attention from people and they can contact you easily. As time go by, people would start acknowledging you and you can officially start out as a freelancer.

- Web Pricing

Nothing comes as free of charge, you must always charge your clients! He told us the pricing of a freelancer. Like a HTML website will definitely cost cheaper than a website which has animations or has CMSD (Core Manufacturing Simulation Data). It depends on how much you can do in your codes and make it interactive instead of a plain old html website.

3 Things inspired:

- I was inspired by the way he present. He was proud of showing his work. I mean if it is your work, you must be proud to showcase your work.

- I was inspired by the amount you can earn as a freelancer when you start out. Although it is going to be tough but the money which awaits you $.$

- The way he incoporate social media into his company.

Yes it is useful for him to share his expertise as we would know how the working life would be after we graduate. By sharing his experience, we know where we can start off instead of jus hanging in the air and do not know what to do.

National Archives.

As i did not attend the field trip, i will be blogging about their website.

About the National Archives.

Anyone who has cleaned out a family attic knows the importance of keeping family records. You may have military records from relatives who served in one of the World Wars—or even the Civil War. Or pictures of your great-great grandparents on the day they became American citizens. Or the canceled check that paid for your first home. Now imagine the task of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)—the nation’s record keeper. This is what they do. They preserve our ancestors information with them.

Then you wonder, what is an Archieve?

An archives is a place where people can go to gather firsthand facts, data, and evidence from letters, reports, notes, memos, photographs, and other primary sources. The National Archives is the U.S. Government’s collection of documents that records important events in American history. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the Government agency that preserves and maintains these materials and makes them available for research.

Their services which they provide.

In addition to assisting Federal agencies and the public with research and reference services, we deliver educational programs and public workshops to help Americans learn how to use archived records.

Social media use:

Social Media and Web 2.0 At The National Archives

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has launched some Web 2.0 technologies and has signed agreements to create NARA sites on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr.  NARA is using these tools and sites to create new ways of communicating with the public and look forward to your feedback. Also if you mouseover to their bookmark and share, you are able to see that you can actually save their webpage or publish it on your facebook. This makes it increase awareness of the National Archieves.

Communication.

1. the act or process of communicating; fact of being communicated. (According to www.dictionary.com)

Is communication only within two people? Let me give you an example, you are watching tv and an advertisement comes up. Are you the only one watching? No. There are much more around the world watching it as well. This is also call communication. Then it makes you suggest whether it is a different type of communication. Well it actually is. The first communcation between 2 people is called Interpersonal communication while the one involving the television is called mass communication.

Interpersonal communication involves two person. Communication can be both give good and bad outcomes. Take this for an example. An information is being pass and suddenly somewhere, someone spills out the wrong information thus everyone would be in trouble but if the right communication tools where use, this wouldn’t result in this kind of communication.

Mass communication involves the media. Radios, Television, etc. are all tools for mass communication. Even in this aspect bad communication can also occur. In the articleShannon stated that she was trying to solve the physical noise , such as interference  on a radio broadcast ,poor TV reception ect. These are interference which causes bad communication in the tools of communication that is experience while communicating. Other than that, there are also major distractions between a receiver and the sender. Even thought they did not have any language barriers or no physical noise existed, the receiver somehow was distracted by something else.  “without a receiver , there is no one to communicate with. ” It all starts with communication which could affect the outcome of it.

It’s Official: App Store Breaks 100,000 Apps.

It’s a devasting increase in the number of Apps in AppleStore had. According to Apple, during the period in August, Apple reach a total of 65,000 Applications in 2009. And also take note that App store only opened its doors in July 2008. Within a year the number has significantly arise. It’s such a remarkable feat to see how much the app store have progressed.  One thing The SDK (Software Developers Kit) allows developers to create applications using Xcode that will natively run on the iPhone and iPod Touch. This way people are able to post their creations online and share it with the world to download.

Technology have advance so much. According to the post on mashable website, Apps which are games take about 16% of the appstore. Due to its reasonable pricing, Applications in Apple store are highly affordable and interactive. The picture at the bottom shows a pie chart of the percentage of different applications. It contributes the largest amount in the app store. Looking at games alone, it have really progress a lot since the olden days. It use to be spinning tops back then. After a while technology took over and computer games started and it slowly involved. Games will always be a part of everyone’s life. Now, games have totally taken to a new level by making ir MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) which allows users to interact with someone around the world. Making the world an advance place to live in. After MMORPG came out, portable handheld consoles started to generate as well. For example, the Playstation Portable aka PSP is a handheld console gaming platform which allows users to play games on the platform.

After PSP came out, Apple decided to launch Ipod touch, a touch screen device which uses static to detect instead of pressure. With the launch of ipod touch, not long Apple decided to come out with the Iphone, a touchscreen handphone. With this 2 prodcuts from Apple, App store open its doors allowing users to download Applications for it. The first few applications were obviously games as it is able to interact with the user. Not long after that, Electronic books also known as Ebooks started to be publish which were entitled to download. Right now, just by boarding the crowded MRT or bus in the morning, you would be able to see people looking at their iphones/ipod touch or figiting with it. Cause nowadays carrying a book and reading it is no longer relevant, a book can jus be downloaded on the iphone/ipod touch for the user to view. Instead of flipping the pages, users just have to scroll it using their index finger.

In time to come, i predict that app store will come out with applications that would be able to play online as well making it competitive in the IT industry.

Communication and Media

It used to be books, letter writing in the past. But ever since with the invention of the internet. It sparked of a new diversity causing technology to take one step causing everything to change. It was just like a snap of a finger. BOOMZ! And it was a totally new era. I mean no one use letter writing like what Romeo and Juliet did but instead people are communcating from one end to the other end of the country with the new electronic mail also known as Email. Life can never been simplier. Also right now, the programme i’m using is called a Blog. In which you write down about your toughts about certain stuff. It use to be the thick black book which lies in your room which is called a diary but with this new technology instead of penning down your feelings and toughts, technology totally change it into a keyboard typography. According to the article in which was given , we spend about 6 hours a day on television and 1 hour or so on the computer. But in my context, i think that it is actually the other way round. Internet right now is just so advance. There is also a new thing called Vlog in which is getting pretty popular with our people. I mean just give it another 10 years and you would see a totally new interface, maybe instead of using a mouse, your computer will be touchscreen interactive. We’ll just see about that. (:
